Why is Reading Important?
Reading is the most necessary skill a child must develop. Why? Just think about the number of things we do every day that require recognizing and understanding the meaning of the printed word. It is how we decode and absorb information, communicate with the world, communicate with friends and family, access technology, follow directions, understand how to select and prepare the food we want, put things together, find medical care, take medication safely, travel, recognize road signs, enjoy a good story, and absorb knowledge.
I am a Reading Specialist, Teacher, and Structured Reading Teacher, certified by the “International Dyslexia Association”. I am also a “Reading Recovery Teacher” and a Trained “Wilson Language Teacher”.
I have been in this role, working with students of all ages for more than twenty years, successfully teaching countless struggling readers to access and understand print. I have a Master’s degree in Reading, and a Bachelor’s degree in Education. My mission is to enable as many non- readers, or struggling readers, to read fluently, and with deep comprehension, as I possibly can.
Dyslexia can run in families. If your child is a reluctant, or non- reader, is failing in school, or feeling badly about themselves as students or with classmates, Dyslexia may be the cause. These students will not read aloud and fear the reaction of their classmates if asked to read in class. This is a source of great anxiety for them. Many students I see, hate school and are having emotional upsets. Yet after a few weeks of proper reading instruction almost every one of them will say to me “Oh! So that’s how it works!” My favorite words! Brain Science has shown us that the brain can repair itself and learn new pathways. There is much we can do.
